I heard the door
Click
As you left
The last time you left
And I'm here
By this bed
We shared
We fared
Better than fair
But it wasn't enough to make you
Keep your heart
In this one
We'd become.
Now the card that I have
With the glitter hearts
And the flowers rotting
On the windowsill
Reflect your face still
And I hear the couples
Outside my door
Whispering their reminders
That I'm in here
With my thoughts,
Warm beer,
And something else...

Did you win the radio call-in
The ski trip for two?
Which two were you?
All your words
The electric fingers
Gone
Exploring other slopes
Your tongue seeking warmer climes.

I thought I saw you yesterday
Your face in the storefront
When I looked again
It was me
Myself
And I
don't want to face front
That I don't see you
Here
Just my thoughts,
Warm beer,
And something else...

Now this day for lovers
Like a tsunami dawns
Drowns
Pounds my blood
Into my brain
One red fist
Into gray finity
Ruthless beats.
I sleep not at all,
The jazz has lost its flavor, and
The cigarette kills much too slowly
These pictures I have
The sheets tossed and stained
I sit drained
Disdained
I restrain
Refrain from something else...

Just my thoughts,
Warm tears,
And nothing else...

Now one
Now two
Now one
I never liked math
The subtraction leaves
A bitter addition
To this division
A better addiction
Than this decision,
Turning aside cold steel
In favor of algorithms
Of rhythm
Of rhyme
Of meter and time
Of nighttime
Rising, and
The darkness entwining
To hide something else...

Just my thoughts,
Worn years,
And someone else...
Somewhere else...

But not you.
